Turning PDFs into images and images into PDFs: a complete guide

Few conversions are as common as these two. A landlord wants your payslips as one PDF; a visa portal wants your bank statement as JPG images. Here's how to do both well.

When you need JPG to PDF

Combine phone photos of a multi-page document, submit receipts as a single expense file, or send a portfolio that keeps its layout. Put the pages in the right order before converting — the PDF will follow that order exactly.

When you need PDF to JPG

Upload a document to a form that only accepts images, share a single page in a chat app, or insert a page into a presentation. Each PDF page becomes a separate image; multi-page files are bundled into a ZIP for one-click download.

Getting the resolution right

PDF pages are vector or embedded images measured in points, not pixels. When rasterising, the scale determines sharpness: around 150 DPI is fine for on-screen reading, 300 DPI for printing or OCR. Higher values make text crisper but files bigger.

Scanning with your phone

Place the page on a dark, contrasting surface in daylight, hold the phone parallel to the paper, and fill the frame. Avoid flash — it creates a bright hotspot. Then convert the photos to a single PDF and compress if it exceeds the upload limit.
